Sandra Leigh Simpson was my maternal Grandmother. I can't possibly express who she was, or what she was like in one small paragraph. She was there for everything. We got so much amusement out of making jokes around her, making her laugh, showing her all the insignificant things that amused us as kids. She was patient, and took her time with things, every movement she made was calm and careful. But she was strong and took care of me, and my brothers. She had so much to say about the stores she liked, the food she loved, the jewelry she had, and how life was for her growing up. But I couldn't help but feel like there was so much more to her life that she chose not to talk about. I wondered about that side of her. I still do.
I have more Peridot jewelry from her than I know what to do with because I was born in August, and she took every opportunity she could to bring little gifts and trinkets when she saw me. She was a Sagittarius, born in December like my brothers. Her favorite color was red, everything she owned, earrings, sweaters, scarves, she had at least one in red. She brought a feeling of family and togetherness just by being there. Christmas with her is burned into my memory. I could express myself freely around her. One of the very last times I spoke to her, she mentioned how I'm the one with the different colors in her hair. All the colors, she said. She laughed when she saw me, and my family. Then it quickly turned to tears. I had never seen her cry before. I thought, she must be overwhelmed with joy seeing us. I hope that's what she was feeling.
My last words with her were a few days before her passing. I was alone with her. I spoke to her, touched her hand...I swear she understood me. Heard me. Saw me. I know she has found peace. I believe she is now dedicated to watching over her family. Just as she did when she was here.
I will always love her.
