Sandra "Sandy" Spice passed away on May 23, 2025, at the age of 88, leaving behind a family stitched together not just by love, but by her quiet, steady influence.
She is survived by her children-Tim Spice, Beth Spice, and Mariann Sabolic-six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, all of whom carry pieces of her forward in the way they move through the world.
Sandy earned a Master's degree in Home Economics and began her career as a teacher, but her classroom extended far beyond school walls. She taught through doing-through the meals she prepared, the quilts she sewed, the pages she turned, and the strokes of her brushes.
At Philmont Scout Ranch, she opened her home and table to friends and families from across the country and beyond. Sunday afternoons at the ranch, served with her famous blueberry buckle, became a tradition people looked forward to-an unassuming event that came to symbolize comfort, hospitality, and the kind of generosity that never announces itself.
She read endlessly, quilted beautifully, and created with her hands daily-never for recognition, always with care. Each quilt she made became a keepsake, crafted with quiet focus and remarkable precision. Sandy was her own unique force--steadfast in her way, and a steady source of support for her husband, children, and grandchildren throughout their lives.
Her life wasn't loud, but it was full-and deeply felt by those who truly knew her.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at St Paul's Episcopal Church, 301 SE 1st St, Evansville, Indiana. All are welcome to remember and honor her life.
To honor Sandy's legacy, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Quilts of Honor at quiltsofhonor.org.
