Alton, IL - Sandra (Sandy) L Vail (Chappell / Fillback) 86 of Alton, IL passed away at her home Saturday March 14, 2026 with Tim and Dana by her side.
She was born November 23, 1939 in Alton, IL to George C. and Lorraine (Lagemann) Chappell and graduated from Alton High School in 1957 and was a member of the First Christian Church on Washington Avenue in Alton. Her focus since retiring from Alton Memorial Hospital was her family and her church family.
Sandy leaves behind 3 of her children, George (Tom) Fillback, Timothy Fillback and daughter Dana (Fillback) Fink, son-in-law Joe Fink; Grandchildren James (Sarah Rushing) Fillback, Thommy Joe Schwan, Tanner (Mandi) Fink, along with her great grandchildren, Elijah, Destin, Drake and Oaklyn. Also survived by her brother-in-law Larry Yost and sister-in-law Mary Chappell. Many nieces and nephews and cherished friends.
Proceeded in death by her parents George and Lorraine Chappell, sisters Susan Yost, Imogene (Jean) Chappell, Shirley Schmidt, Mildred Malson, Ruth Fowler, and brother Mike Chappell. Brothers-in-laws, Earl Schmidt, Bill Malson, and her beautiful daughter Debi (Fillback - Dale) Mitchell. Nephew Brian Yost and our father Thomas B Fillback.
Visitation will be held from 10:30 am until the time of service at 11:30 am on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at the First Christian Church, 760 Washington Avenue, Alton, IL. Pastor Jim Johnston will be officiating.

The family has entrusted Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with the services.
