Sandra Viner Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, and aunt Sandra Ann (Knox) Viner, age 87, of Pittsfield, MA who died Wednesday October 1, 2025 at Mt. Greylock Extended Care Facility.

She was born in Pittsfield, MA on June 24, 1938, a daughter of Clarence K. and Verna M. (Duquette) Knox. She graduated from Pittsfield High School and Berkshire Community College.

For many years Sandra made "the best pizza" in Pittsfield - operating first at the Fenn and Fourth and then at Jimmy's Restaurant. Her son Joe remembers the weeks in the summertime they spent together on the Cape. When she and Bill Chapman were married in 1976, they knew, along with her two sons and his 3 children, that there was a strong possibility that the 2 families could become one. The foundation was laid for a family bond that lives on today. She pursued a career in Social Services for many years, most recently at Downey Side in Pittsfield. She was a communicant of both St. Mark's Church in Pittsfield and The Church of Our Savior in Cocoa Beach FL and served both churches as an active volunteer. She resided in Florida for many years until returning to Pittsfield in 2011.

Sandra is survived by her five children, Michael Gromatski of Indialantic, FL, Joseph Tyler (Mala) of Pembroke, NH, Mark Chapman (Sonja) of Loveland, CO, Karen Decker (Glen) of Pittsfield, MA, and Christine Chapman of PA. She is also survived by her 7 grandchildren, Beck, Morgan, Emma, Courtney, Cory, Carly, and Michelle. Her three great grandchildren, Lewis, Austin, and Colton and many nieces and nephews. In addition she leaves her close friends Beverly Wilson and Dale Canino, cousin Lee Ann Daly, and sister-in-law Becky Knox. She was predeceased by her parents, sister, Karen Bates, and brother Michael Knox and husbands Edward Tyler Gromatski and William Chapman, and her beloved cousin Leonora Zatorski.

Sandra's family would like to thank all of the staff at Mt Greylock ECF for the loving care they gave our mom during her time there. She adored each and every one of you and will be treasured forever in her heart. Thank you too to Hospicecare for your compassion and care at end of life.
