Sandra Kay Whisenand, 80, passed away on April 13, 2024. She was born in Des Moines on May 21, 1943, to Alfred and Mary Nahas (Essy).
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2024, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd) with the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2024, also at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.
Sandra married Robert Whisenand Sr. on August 28, 1958. They found love at first sight in 1957 when Robert was driving down her street with two other girls in his car. He stopped and asked Sandra if she wanted a ride. She jumped in with nothing else being said and the other girls jumped out; it was instant love for the next 65 years.
Sandra worked in the meat department at Dahl's grocery store for more than 35 years, retiring at age 67. She and Robert loved camping, boating with their sons, and traveling. Some of her favorite vacations were trips to the Great Smoky Mountains, Colorado, South Dakota, and many other locations with family in tow.
Sandra also loved to gamble with Robert. They played their luck in Las Vegas and Laughlin, NV, and Atlantic City, NJ. Most of the time they walked away empty handed but loved every minute of it. On occasion, they hit it big!
In retirement, she enjoyed woodworking with Robert and painting the things they had made. They never sold their items but instead gifted them to the family.
Sandra was addicted to game shows like Jeopardy, The Wall, and her favorite Wheel of Fortune. She also loved watching home remodeling shows and My Million Dollar Lottery Dream Home.
Over the last few years, Sandra's health had declined. Her niece, Pam Killen (Eddie), was an advocate for her for many years, taking her to her medical appointments, and making sure she had her favorite foods. Her most favorite food was Hawaiian pizza. Pam was there no matter what and for whatever Sandra needed. Sandra loved and appreciated Pam, and her family extends their gratitude as well.
Our mom was a very strong-willed person and she fought like hell until the very end. Mom, we will always carry you in our Hearts forever.
Sandra is survived by her husband, Bob; sons, Bob Jr. (Lori) and Donnie (Diana); as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Mary; son, David; and brothers, Richard and Leroy.
Memorial contributions may be made to AHeinz57 Pet Rescue and Transport or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
