Sara “Sally” Louise Weller Coon passed away on January 18, 2026 in Oklahoma City, following a long decline. She was born on October 6,1928 to William Heusted Weller and Mary Louise (Searcy) Weller in Hannibal, Missouri. The family purchased and moved to a farm in Green Ridge, Missouri, outside of Sedalia, when Sara was five years old. After her father contracted a chronic illness, her mother worked for the Red Cross and ran the farm with the help of Sara and a local farm hand. As a single child, Sara was a veracious reader and enjoyed academics, art, and the farm. She attended elementary School in Green Ridge and completed High School in Sedalia. She was a child of the Great Depression but was always a good student. Her Uncle Paul Searcy made sure that she had whatever she needed during those lean times, including an advanced education.

Sara completed Christian College (now Columbia, a co-ed college) a two-year girls’ school in Missouri. She completed her Bachelor of Science Degree at the

University of Missouri. During her time at MU, she met a charming soldier, Lowell Leslie Coon, who had returned from the War and was attending MU on the GI Bill. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at MU. On June 10,1950 they were married.

Sara’s first consideration was always her family. She and Lowell had three children - a girl and two boys. She was a loving and dedicated wife and mother. Her love for her family was evident, as she was always driving to ballet classes, art activities, baseball practices, scouting activities, piano lessons, school extracurricular activities, church, and other destinations. Sara was the mother with cookies for school parties and food for church events. She was consistently supportive of her children and encouraged them in the interests that they pursued.

Sara was a designer and maker of clothing and home décor, pianist, lover of music, accomplished gardener, animal lover (especially the family pets), and wonderful cook. Sara was a Cryptogram wizard and enjoyed solving puzzles. She and Lowell enjoyed attending OK Mozart events for many years and supported that civic enterprise. Upon retirement, they also enjoyed spending many days at their vacation home in Eastern Oklahoma, where they entertained family, and spent many hours enjoying nature, particularly watching wildlife. It was their grandsons’ favorite place.

Sara would admit that she was an introvert, but she forced herself, and encouraged her children, to be involved in worthwhile activities and organizations, to everyone’s benefit. She was a woman of strong faith and gratitude. Sara and Lowell were long-time members of First United Methodist Church of Bartlesville, where they enjoyed many meaningful friendships and service activities. She volunteered in numerous civic, social service, and church organizations including French Club, Tuesday Club, Hannah Circle (United Methodist Women), Mutual, CONCERN, Cub Scouts (as Den Mother), and many others. She and Lowell were kind and giving.

Sara is preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Coon. They were married 68 years. She is survived by their three children: Leslie (Coon) Bohon-Bothwell and her husband Dr. Phillip Bothwell of Norman; Paul and his wife Diana (Valdez) Coon of Dallas; and Dr. David Coon of Phoenix. She also leaves five grandsons and spouses, William David Bohon (Elizabeth), Lawrence Bothwell (Shawna), John Paul Bohon (Alexis), Dustin Bothwell, and Brian Bohon (husband Florentino- deceased). She adored her grandchildren. Although she was a single child, she came to embrace her husband’s siblings, spouses, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews as her own.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the many health care professionals and caregivers who have provided so much care and assistance over the last several years. Each treated her as though she was theirs, and each was eternally patient with and supportive of the family.

Services will be held at First United Methodist Church Bartlesville at 4715 Price Road on February 4, 2026, at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed to Washington County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at wcspca.org or 16620 State Hwy 123, Bartlesville, OK 74006, or to First United Methodist Church of Bartlesville at bartlesvilleunited.com or 4715 Price Road, Bartlesville, OK 74006.
