Sarah Delson Obituary

Sarah Delson
July 5, 1961 - May 4, 2023
With profound sadness, the family of Sarah Kramer Delson wishes to report that Sarah passed away on May 4, peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by family. The cause of death was ovarian cancer. Sarah was 61 years old.
Sarah was an award-winning artist in both commercial and fine arts. She was a loving and compassionate wife to Larry Kramer, a devoted mother to Kiki Kramer, a caring sister to Ben Silverman, a sensitive daughter to Mary Silverman, and a treasured friend to countless others. As all who knew her would attest, Sarah was brilliant and unexpected. She had a sense of humor as quick and smart as it was audacious, and a remarkable capacity to be fully present for others. Whether seated next to a university president or a guy in a folding chair with one day sober, Sarah made people feel seen and understood. Many among her family and friends knew her as the wisest person they had met.
Born in New York City, Sarah attended high school at Trinity and Choate Rosemary Hall before earning a Bachelor's degree in drama from Sarah Lawrence College. Upon graduation, she embarked on a career as an actress, appearing in a range of theatrical productions, music videos, and TV shows. But Sarah's primary artistic endeavor proved to be in visual arts. Among the earliest graphic designers to use computers, she became an acclaimed creator of greeting cards before shifting to book jackets at St. Martin's Press, where she quickly rose to Art Director, designing a myriad of innovative covers for which she also won numerous awards.
In 2004, Sarah and her family made their way to Stanford, California: a new adventure for a woman whose entire life had been spent in New York City. She quit smoking, stopped wearing black, and learned how to drive; before long she could be seen cruising about in a dinged-up black sedan wearing yoga pants. She turned her garage into a studio and immersed herself in her true artistic passions: painting, drawing, and sculpture. Over the ensuing years, and especially after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, Sarah's art increasingly depicted the unpredictability of life. Her sculpture "Chance"-a heart made of red dice created for the 2021 "SF in Hearts" competition-was sold just months before her diagnosis for ovarian cancer.
Sarah's artwork received a great many honors and recognitions. It has been shown in museums, including the de Young, and hangs in many private galleries and public spaces.
Alongside art, Sarah developed a passion for yoga. She became a twice certified yoga instructor, not to teach, but simply because she loved the practice, the philosophy, and the community. Yoga was a perfect reflection of the grounded, giving person she was.
Sarah is survived by a broken-hearted husband, daughter, brother, mother, and too many true friends to name.
The funeral service will be private. There will be a memorial service at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, Sarah has asked those who wish to remember her to contribute to The Drawing Room SF or The Alliance to Cure Cavernous Malformation.

So sorry Mary Ellen. Shouldn't happen to anyone at all. Another Sarah Delson. Welcome to our terrible club, our side of the wall. When you are with one of us, you are understood, and nothing you say is wrong. Love to Ben. Stay in touch.
