Ms. Sarah Jo Killens, age 83, passed away peacefully at Hilltop Nursing Home on Friday, January 12, 2024. She was born on March 17, 1940 as the youngest child of the late Mart and Lola Smith Killen.
Jo was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt and cousin to her extended family. After she graduated from Sebastopol High School, she moved to Union, Mississippi and spent her working years employed in the various plants in Newton and Neshoba Counties.
A proud and longtime member of Rocky Hill Church of God, outside of Sebastopol, Jo learned to play the piano and sing at an early age. A precious soul who wanted others to know the joy of her Jesus, Jo regularly loaded her five Union nieces and nephews up in her VW bug and carried them to Rocky Hill. After her best friend and roommate Essie Hinson died, Jo moved to Hilltop Nursing Home and lived several joyous years under the care of the staff there, to whom the family is so grateful. Occasionally, she felt well enough to entertain the staff and other residents with her singing and piano playing. Her songs were generally about the joy of salvation because Jo was confident that her Lord and Savior had a place for her in Heaven with her parents, who spoiled and babied her until the day they died. Although her friends and family will miss her, they are comforted by the knowledge that her soul is safe with Jesus.
Jo was predeceased by her parents, Mart and Lola Killen; her infant sisters, Willie Mae Killen and Dorothy Killen; her adult siblings, Louise Killen Roebuck, Grady "Bud" Killen and Billy Killen; and one nephew, Martin DeWayne Killen.
Jo is survived by her nieces and nephews: Sandra Dolan of Union; Charlie (Barbara) Killen of Brandon, Linda (Ricky) Gressett of Brandon, Debbie (Bill) Halford of Meadville, Marty (Lynda) Killen of Sebastopol; and Kathy Jo (Mark) Moore of Sebastopol; and sister-in-law, Nell Killen (widow of Billy) of Sebastopol.
