Sarah Matt Obituary
Sarah Gerwin Matt, age 91, passed away on August 2, 2025. She was the daughter of Frank Joseph Gerwin, Sr. and Elizabeth Melvin Gerwin. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Charles William Matt; her sister, Betty Loving of Newport News and brother, Frank J. Gerwin, Jr. (Claudie) of Richmond. She is survived by her daughters, Katherine Reilly (Ed) of Trinity, Fla. and Margaret Monnett (Greg) of Powhatan; sons, Brian Matt of Richmond and David Matt (Mimi) of Hoboken, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Evan (Chloe) and Michael Reilly, Rachel (Brandon) and Christina Matt, Ethan and Anna Monnett, and Ava Park-Matt; a great-grandchild, Kaia Reilly; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a graduate of St. Gertrude High School and attended VCU. She enjoyed volunteering at Freedom House, Veterans Administration Hospital, Little Sisters of the Poor, and many of the schools her children attended.
A visitation will be held at Bliley's Central Funeral Home, 3801 Augusta Ave., on August 17, 2025, 2 to 4 p.m.. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd., on August 18, 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Benedictine Schools Educational Foundation, 12829 River Rd, Richmond, VA 23238 or St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd, Henrico, VA 23229.

My sincerest condolences to the Matt family. I went to St. Benedicts with David and Margaret and later I went to Marymount where Sarah was such a important part of the Staff and friend to all. In my adult years, I ran into again in my adult life only to find out she had moved just blocks away from me. We would chat and found out we had volunteering in common. Sarah was one of the most cheerful and encouraging women to so many of us as young girls at Marymount. Her door was always open. Sarah loved and was so proud of her family and talked of them often. Her presence will be missed by all who knew her as her heart was so big. Again, my sincerest condolences for the loss of Sarah. Sincerely, Janet L. Ziolkowski
