Sarah Louise Rookstool, 75, of Rainelle passed peacefully at Hilltop Center on Sunday, April 20, 2025. Born January 14, 1950, at Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lucinda (Cecil) French.
She was a lover of pets, but there is no doubt that her grandchildren captivated her heart. Most people remember Sarah for her 38 years of cooking in the Greenbrier County School system. Her passion for making people comfortable with food was obvious.
Her enjoyment after retirement was time spent with Pearl, her beloved cat, watching old black and white television, and cooking for her friends and family. She was a simple, hardworking, daughter of a coal miner.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Alva Marvin Lewis, infant son Ramond Lewis, second husband Paul Rookstool, daughter Sandra Rookstool-Dunford and infant granddaughter Sophia Grace Dunford, daughter Carla Smith Zickafoose, and her son-in-law J.D. Shawver.
Those left with the love and fond memories of Sarah are daughters Charlotte Melda (Ken) of Lewisburg, Victoria Shawver of Charmco; brothers Charles French (Linda) of Whitesville, and Curtis Martin (Zelta) of Danese; grandchildren Dakota Smith (Brittany) of Rainelle, Dustin Smith (Hailey) of Rainelle, namesake Sarah Shawver of Charmco; and great-grand daughter Ana Smith of Rainelle.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00pm at Smathers Funeral Chapel Rainelle on Thursday, April 24, 2025, with Howard Shaffer officiating. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Warren Cemetery at Crickmer.
Smathers Funeral Chapel is honored to have been entrusted to care for Sarah and her family during their great time of need.
