Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sosebee Funeral Home on Oct. 1, 2025.
With full hearts, we announce the homegoing of Sarah Elrod Worley beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and quiet-but-mighty servant of the Lord. She was welcomed into eternity on May 14, 2025, just months after her husband Vernie, with whom she shared a love story that spanned more than 71 years.
Born June 14,1936, to William and Irene Elrod, Sarah grew up in Woodstock, Georgia, with a strong will, a tender heart, and a steady faith. As a young woman, she met a boy named Vernie at Sunlight Baptist Church. They married in 1953 and built a life centered on ministry, family, and service. For over five decades, Sarah stood faithfully beside her husband as he pastored twelve churches across North Georgia.
Sarah loved flowers, fresh bedding, and framed photographs. She believed in keeping a tidy house and a full heart. Her joy multiplied with every addition to the family, and in her final days, she was surrounded by photos of her great-grandchildren-Caroline, Banks, and Fulton-the ones who called her Moe and brought her the most joy. She had a signature style-always dressed just so, with a colorful jacket, a string of pearls and her hair done right.
She is survived by her daughters (known as "her girls"), Brenda Austin (Tommy) and Lynn Wagoner (Jeff); her grandchildren, Valerie Kidd (Adam), Colby Wagoner, and Courtney Talley (Jarrett); and her great-grandchildren, Caroline Kidd, Banks Talley, and Fulton Talley. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dott Elrod, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and a faithful circle of brothers and sisters in Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Vernie Worley; her parents, William and Irene Elrod; her sisters, Annie Barnes and Doris Elrod; and her brothers, Joe Elrod and Billy Elrod.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 17th at Rock Springs Baptist Church, with Rev. Jonathan Kirby officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Rock Springs Baptist Church on Friday, May 16th from 4:00-8:00 pm and Mrs. Worley will lie-in-state one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of The Retreat at Canton, as well as the compassionate team at Trinity Hospice, for the love and care shown in her final season.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rock Springs Baptist Church Building Fund, 1640 Rock Springs Ln, Woodstock, GA 30188, Harmony Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, 5470 Keith Bridge Rd, Cumming, GA 30041, or to the
charity of your choice.
Sarah lived by the promises of Scripture, and the verse that steadied her through it all was Isaiah 40:31 (KJV):
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
The family kindly request no food.
