Scott Sain

Marcus Scott Sain, of Crouse, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024. He was 65 years old.

Born on June 28, 1958, in Cleveland County, Scott was the youngest son of John Edmond and Frances Inez Dellinger Sain. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, John Edmond Sain, Jr.; father- and mother-in-law, John and Loretta Reinhardt; and brother-in-law, Jim Leatherman.

Scott grew up in Crouse, part of a close-knit group of friends, relatives and neighbors whose many adventures included a vacation where they located the Fort Fisher Hermit, Robert Harrill, and invited him to dinner. Scott graduated from West Lincoln High School in 1976. An accomplished athlete, he was recognized with several All-Conference awards in football and baseball. He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Western Carolina University where he was a brother of Pi Kappa Alpha. Scott started his career in manufacturing and production management before owning and operating Quality Tileworks, a custom tile and stonework company, with his father. He then spent 24 years with YRC Freight before retiring in 2022.

An avid outdoorsman, Scott had a deep appreciation for nature and shared his love of hunting and fishing with his son, grandsons and nephews. He also loved the water, teaching his children and grandsons to swim, dive and confidently navigate any body of water. Many things came naturally to Scott. Whether trying a new sport or taking up a new hobby, he mastered it quickly. His talents in construction, sculpture, drawing, painting and design contributed to school projects with the same skill used in his work. He loved French roast coffee, good books and great music, but most of all, he loved his family, friends and animals.

Scott will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Christie Reinhardt Sain; a daughter, Kimberly (Daniel); a son, Will (Holly); two beloved grandsons, William Iziah and John Wyatt Sain, who knew him as their Papa; a sister, Joyce Leatherman; sisters-in-law, Mary Johnson (Steve) and Cynthia Champion; a brother-in-law, Doug Reinhardt (Jo); nieces, Amanda Mault (Robbie), Katie Johnson, Melinda Turner (Kevin), Brandi Hoffman, Lacey Arey (Jay) and Crystal Champion; nephews, Kevin Sain (Angela), Terry Auton, Clint Gantt, Steven Johnson and Mark Johnson (Kristin); 18 great nieces and nephews; and many close friends and neighbors.

The family offers our deepest gratitude to Joyce Leatherman, Mary and Steve Johnson, Jo and Doug Reinhardt, Jill and Rick Goins, Rick Houser, Ralph Jr. and Claudean Elmore, Renelda Jones, and Darcel Walker for their love, support and friendship.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Lincoln County Animal Services or the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission. Those who wish to honor Scott are encouraged to take a trip to Carolina Beach and enjoy a Britt’s donut in his memory.
