Scott Schaupp Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Farley Funeral Homes and Crematory - Venice on Jan. 29, 2025.
The family of Scott Schaupp, age 81, announces his peaceful passing after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on April 28, 1943, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to John Schaupp and Frances Kramme Schaupp, Scott spent his formative years in the Fort Dodge school system. He graduated in 1961 from Birmingham Seaholm High School in Michigan, where he lived with his first cousin during his senior year. A gifted athlete, Scott excelled in football, wrestling, and track. His athletic pursuits continued at the University of Detroit, where he joined the football team as a walk-on punter, earning his numerals and participating in spring practice. Following the university's decision to discontinue its football program, Scott transferred to Iowa State University in the fall of 1962 as a preferred walk-on. Honoring his promise, Head Coach Clay Stapleton awarded Scott a full Division I football scholarship in November 1962. He graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and later earned a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Detroit in 1969, completing a graduate assistantship.
Scott devoted 29 years to the Sarasota County School Board, where he served at Sarasota Junior/Middle School, Brentwood Elementary, and Fruitville Elementary before retiring in 1998. Outside his career, Scott embraced life with boundless enthusiasm. He was passionate about motorcycling with the BMW MOA group, tournament fishing with the Mako Owners of America, snow skiing across the U.S. and Europe, camping, and whitewater rafting in the Appalachians. Scott cherished 28 summers and winter breaks in two vacation homes he built in Wolf Laurel, North Carolina, creating treasured memories with loved ones.
A proud Marine Corps veteran, Scott served from December 1966 to December 1967. He was also a member of the Iowa Beta Chapter of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, initiated in the fall of 1963.
Scott is survived by his beloved wife of over 30 years, Candy Millington; his two sisters, Karen Schaupp of Blairsville, GA, and Nan Schaupp of Hendersonville, NC; his stepdaughter, Dr. Heather Wasserman, and her husband, Lt. Brett Wasserman; and two cherished grandsons, Hunter and Ethan Wasserman.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Scott's memory can be made to the Scott C. Schaupp Legacy Fund at the Gulf Coast Community Foundation.
