Sean Darwin Cooper passed away unexpectedly on July 23, 2025, in
Broomfield, Colorado. He was 59 years old.
Born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1965, Sean was raised primarily in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. From the beginning, he was a bright light-precocious, curious, and quick to smile. He had a big heart, a brilliant mind, and an easy laugh that drew people in. As a child, Sean's love of science was evident. He won multiple science fair awards and, at age 12, became a volunteer at the Omniplex science museum, where he performed live demonstrations of scientific principles for the public. In a 1978 feature article, The Daily Oklahoman called him "the friendliest kid at Omniplex"-a fitting title he wore proudly.
By high school, Sean found himself torn between his two great passions: science and music. He began exploring computers-spending lunch breaks tinkering with the school's TRS-80-and simultaneously picked up the guitar, teaching himself the building blocks of music. He graduated from Northwest Classen High School in 1986 and began his college studies at Oklahoma City Community College. In 1990, his passion for music led him to Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts.
Eventually, Sean's creative and analytical sides merged in the world of technology. After moving to New York City, he shifted his focus to computer software development, where he found his niche. Over the years, he worked on everything from software for national ad campaigns to projects with McGraw-Hill and The New York Times.
Sean was living in Lower Manhattan during the events of September 11, 2001-a deeply affecting experience that stayed with him. In the aftermath, he channeled his emotions into action, submitting a proposal for a 9/11 memorial design as a gesture of healing and remembrance.
In 2012, Sean moved to the Denver area, where he continued his work as a software engineer, both in corporate settings and as a freelancer. His clients included S&P Global, Charter Communications, Data Health, First Data Government Solutions, Cigna Healthcare, Lakeside Amusement Park, and Jeppesen Aviation-where he particularly loved the perk of aviation training, a lifelong dream.
Sean will be remembered for his intelligence, creativity, warmth, and wit. He was a gentle soul who loved animals, rooted for the underdog, and remained endlessly curious about the world.
He is survived by his parents, George and Gwendolyn Cooper of Oklahoma City, and his sister, Kylene Cooper of Arvada, Colorado. He is also lovingly remembered by extended family from California, Georgia, Illinois, and Massachusetts.
A memorial service is currently being planned. Prayers for the peaceful journey of Sean's soul are deeply appreciated.
