Seija Doolittle, a woman of many talents and an adventurous spirit, embarked on her final journey on October 13th, 2025, from her home in Hermitage TN.
Born in Finland on January 10th, 1942, Seija's life was a rich tapestry of experiences, spanning continents and careers.
Her early life took her from Finland, where she was an avid Baseball (Pesäpallo) player & pitcher, to Germany & Sweden, where she delved into medical studies, and worked for the US Embassy before eventually making her way to the United States. Education remained a constant theme in Seija's life, leading her to earn two master’s degrees in economics and history from Wilson College. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to Shippensburg University, where she met the love of her life, Dr. Lawrence Doolittle.
Together, Seija and Larry shared a passion for exploration, traveling extensively across the USA and Europe. Seija also dedicated herself to teaching, first at Hagerstown Jr. College and later at Delaware Tech, where she retired. Her connection with her students was special, often extending beyond the classroom with gatherings at her home. A true linguist, Seija was fluent in four languages and loved practicing new ones with the foreign exchange students she hosted in her home.
Seija was a culinary enthusiast, a keen observer of people, a joyful dancer, and a captivating storyteller. Her love for reading was matched by her green thumb, evident in the beautiful flowers she grew for her daughter's wedding. Known for her generous spirit and welcoming nature, she never met a stranger and was always ready to help others. Animals held a special place in her heart, especially the six Standard Poodles who were cherished family members over the years.
Seija is survived by her daughters, Sherry (Pete) Piper-McKernan, Stina Stubkjare Nielsen, her stepchildren, Laurie Doolittle Greene (the late Rick Greene), Timothy Doolittle (Terri), and Douglas Doolittle (Marta) and grandchildren, Nicholas, Sofia, Jonathan & Corey, brothers Markku (Irma) & Pauli Ikola (Ulla).
Seija also leaves behind her amazing friends, Judy Huffines & Martha Leary. Special thanks to Karen Webb for always making Seija laugh & smile, and her compassion for taking care of her.
Seija is predeceased in death by her husband, Lawrence W. Doolittle, her mother Toini Amalia Ikola, and father Jaakko Sannanpoika Maki, and brothers Antti (Marjo) & Martii (Late Anita) Ikola.
In lieu of flowers, share the spirit of Seija- befriend someone that is different than you, smile at a stranger, help someone in need, invite someone for dinner, and if they accept, offer them a rum & coke. Specific dates for Seija’s Celebrations of Life in Tennessee & Delaware are pending and will be shared with all family & friends!
