Selmer Garland

YNC Selmer W. Garland, USN (Ret), age 90, was born in Shady Valley, TN and has resided in Virginia Beach since 1955. His earthly travel ended September 26, 2024. Mr. Garland retired from the Navy in 1971 and from the U.S. General Accountability Office (GAO) 1993. Norfolk Chamber of Commerce selected him as the first recipient of the "Military Citizen of the Year" Award. He appeared in the National Junior Chamber of Commerce 1967 Edition of Outstanding Men in America. Mr. Garland received the Legion of Honor and Cross of Honor Awards from the International Supreme Council Order of DeMolay. He attended the Little Creek JEB Chapel and was a member of the Bayside Masonic Lodge. Mr. Garland is survived by his wife, Rebecca Pauline (Polly); son Richard Dennis (Denny) and wife Trudy; daughter Susan and husband Dennis Pauly; one grandson, two granddaughters, eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; two sisters Wahnita Medina and Louise Garland Tanner. Family will receive friends at Altmeyer Funeral Home 5033 Rouse Dr, in Virginia Beach on October 25 at 11am for a memorial service. Inurnment at Albert G.
