Settle John W. Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Peters Funeral Home - Gettysburg on Feb. 17, 2026.
John W. "Bill", "Doc" Settle, 93of Gettysburg passed away peacefully at Gettysburg Hospital on Sunday, February 15th, 2026. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to the late Edith S. (Bushman) Settle until her passing on November 14, 2012.

Born May 25, 1932 in Gettysburg, he was a son of the late Paul M. and Edna S. (Stevens) Settle.

Mr. Settle is fondly remembered by his family and friends as a great mentor who could fix anything, and was always willing to lend his talents to help others. A truck driver by trade, he traveled the highways for 50 years, averaging 100,000 miles yearly, transporting goods for Pitzer, Gabler and Kuhn, all based in Gardners, PA and for EXEL Freight & Cargo Services in Mechanicsburg. He was also a proud U.S. Army veteran. In his free time, Bill enjoyed spending time at his hunting cabin in Potter County and spending time with the many German Shepherds he owned over the years. He is also remembered for his robust sense of humor and his storytelling. All who knew him will miss his many tales of adventure on the road during his long career.

He is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings: Paul R. Settle, Jack R. Settle and Elinor "Teeny" Bender.

The family invites all to a graveside service to celebrate Bill's life at 11am on Saturday, February 21st at McKnightstown Cemetery on Old Route 30.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Inc.; 1013 Mumma Road, Suite 203; Wormleysburg, PA 17043 or online by visiting www.pawoundedwarriors.org

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Peters Funeral Home, Inc. in Gettysburg.
