Obituary for Wonny Hwang
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Wonny Hwang, who departed this life on May 7, 2025, at the age of 51, following a brave two-year battle with a terminal illness. She passed peacefully, surrounded by love, just four days before Mother's Day.
Wonny was born on August 10, 1973, in Changwon, South Korea. From an early age, she was cherished by a loving father and supportive brother who nurtured her talents and joy. As a young girl, she showed a passion for music and dance, excelling in both and performing in numerous competitions.
At 24, Wonny met and married Jaedong Lee, a naval officer, through a blind date. They built a life together in Changwon and raised two sons, Jeongwook and Jeongwoo, who quickly became the center of her world. To Wonny, her greatest calling and joy was being a mother, and she lived every day with that purpose.
In 2002, Wonny endured the heartbreaking loss of her father, a central figure in her life. With strength and grace, she continued forward for the sake of her young children. Her resilience was tested again in 2008 when she lost her beloved husband, Jaedong, to cancer. Despite the devastation, Wonny remained steadfast in her love and responsibility for her sons.
In 2011, Wonny courageously moved to the United States to provide greater opportunities for her family. There, she began a new chapter of tireless dedication-working at H Mart, running her own sushi restaurant, and later relocating to Georgia, where she spent three and a half years working at a poultry farm while pursuing legal residency for herself and her sons. These years were among the most difficult of her life, marked by sacrifice, separation, and unyielding love.
Wonny was a pillar of strength. Her commitment and hard work bore fruit in the accomplishments of her sons-one becoming a valedictorian, an engineer at Intel, and a commercial airline pilot. She was immensely proud of them, finding joy and fulfillment in their success.
In 2022, she relocated to Seattle to be closer to her son and share in his life as he began his career as a pilot. Though her time in Seattle was short, it was filled with meaningful moments and deep love. Soon after, she was diagnosed with a terminal illness. She faced her diagnosis with quiet courage, her foremost concern always being the future of her sons.
Despite the pain and the many hospital visits, Wonny never lost hope. She dreamed of seeing her sons marry, start families, and continue to thrive. Her perseverance and love through her final months reflected the same selfless devotion that defined her entire life.
Wonny Hwang is preceded in death by her father and her beloved husband, Jaedong Lee. She is survived by her two sons, Jeongwook and Jeongwoo Lee, her dear brother, and many relatives and friends who were touched by her warmth, resilience, and unwavering love.
Wonny's legacy is one of strength, sacrifice, and immeasurable love. Though she has returned to heaven, her spirit lives on in the lives of those she loved so fiercely.
We thank you for your condolences and support as we remember and honor the remarkable life of Wonny Hwang.
