ROBERT WILLIAM BONNER, 86, beloved husband of Sherley A. Scott Bonner, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Uptown Division in Augusta, GA, following an extended illness.
A native of Brooklyn, NY, Robert was a son of the late James and Eloise Alexander Bonner. In 1958, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he distinguished himself over a remarkable 27-year career, retiring as Sergeant Major in the Special Forces in 1985. His service included roles as a radio operator, infantry operations specialist, intelligence specialist, medic, and scuba diver. He was honored with numerous awards, including the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star.
After retirement from the military, Robert continued to serve his community through a dedicated 23-year career with Wackenhut at the Savannah River Site.
Surviving is his loving wife of almost 60 years, Sherley; two sons, Scott Bonner and Marcus Bonner; seven grandchildren, Brynn Walker (Callaghan), Brooke Bonner, Blaine Bonner, Lily Bonner, Riley Bonner, Noah Bonner and Ethan Bonner. Robert is also survived by his siblings, Victor (Beatrice), Steven (Debra), Barbara Bernadette (Eberly), Judy, Joy, Celeste (Ricardo) and Edith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Eddie, Gaylord, Henry and Elaine.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening, April 10th from 5 until 7 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
The Funeral Mass will be Celebrated Friday afternoon, April 11th at 1 o’clock at St. Gerards Catholic Church. The service will be livestreamed following a link on his obituary page or at (https://iframe.dacast.com/b/156599/c/585055). Farewell Prayers and Commendations will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens with Military Honors.
