Shamwattie "Dato" Baldeo Obituary
February 9, 1954 - March 9, 2025
Shamwattie was a remarkable mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a woman whose love and kindness touched us all. While our hearts are heavy with loss, they are also filled with gratitude for the time we were blessed to share with her.
Shamwattie Baldeo was born in Guyana on February 9, 1954, to her parents, Jasmat Seeram Baldeo, and Sunny Bamboo Baldeo. She grew up alongside her five siblings-Cull, Patty, Drup, Babe, and Kenneth. She later married Berty; together, they had three beautiful children: David, Maureen, and Sarah.
Shamwattie migrated from Guyana to Suriname then to New York for a better life for her family. In 1986, Shamwattie and her family immigrated to New York to pursue the American dream, and in 2005, she purchased her first home in Queens, where she resided until her passing.
Shamwattie was a breast cancer survivor at age 52. She later battled pancreatic cancer at age 70 and lost the fight at age 71. Her journey with cancer taught us the true meaning of strength, resilience and hope.
She is survived by her loving children-David, Maureen, and Sarah-and their father, Berty. She was a devoted grandmother to Brandon, Nicholas, Elijah, Dylan, Isaiah, and Damian, and welcomed her daughter-in-law Pamela and granddaughter-in-law, Shaiann, with love and open arms. She is also survived by her siblings Drup and Patty, her sister-in-law Rattie, cousins, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
As we say goodbye today, let us honor her by carrying forward the lessons she taught us-to be kind, generous, and to love fiercely. Though she is no longer with us physically, her love remains woven into the fabric of our lives-a legacy that will endure for generations.
