Sharon Burroughs Stevens of Chapel Hill, NC, passed away peacefully at home on October 26, 2025. She was born in Danbury, CT, on December 22, 1972, and made Chapel Hill her home for the past 26 years. Sharon was a mother, a dear friend, and a steadfast believer in the goodness of people.
A lifelong artist, Sharon devoted herself to creative projects that reflected her deep compassion and sense of connection. Among her many works was Art for My Mom, a year-long project dedicated to the memory of her mother. She also presented solo and group exhibitions at various venues throughout the region. A selection of her artwork can be viewed at sharonebstevens.com.
Recently, Sharon was developing Love Letter Dolls, a line of plush dolls designed to help foster communication between children and their caregivers. Beyond her art, Sharon gave generously of her time, volunteering with local organizations including the Chapel Hill Service League, University Presbyterian Church, and PeeWee Homes. She always put people first, striving to make her community a kinder and more connected place.
Sharon is survived by her husband of 30 years, Bruce Stevens, and their three beloved children: Clive (22), Lois (20), and Rhett (20). Motherhood was central to Sharon’s life, and she took great pride in the extraordinary people her children have become and the ways they continue to grow. She was preceded in death by her parents, William J. Burroughs, Jr., and Marlen (Latussek) Burroughs.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 10:00 AM at University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Sharon’s memory to PeeWee Homes (peeweehomes.org).
