Sharon Young Hiatt left this world on Wednesday October 29th, 2025, after facing pancreatic cancer with incredible strength and grace. She was 68 years old.
Born on December 11th, 1956 in Surry County, North Carolina, Sharon was the beloved daughter of Alyene and Haywood Young. She graduated from Mount Airy High School in 1975 and attended Greensboro College on a music scholarship before completing her education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1979, earning a bachelor's degree in social work.
Throughout her life, Sharon dedicated herself to work that reflected both her talent and her deep care for others. She taught piano for her entire adult life, sharing her love of music with students of all ages. Alongside her husband, she owned and operated Cartridge World-Ashburn for ten years. In later years, she found fulfillment as an office manager at Sleep Med Solutions in Greensboro, where she was admired for her dedication and exemplary work ethic.
Sharon's faith inspired a lifetime of service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Among her many church assignments, she cherished her time as a seminary teacher, and also loved teaching Sunday School and Primary. She shared her musical gifts as a Primary pianist and ward organist, and she gave generously of her time while supporting her husband in his years of service as bishop. She served faithfully as Young Women's President and in the Stake Relief Society Presidency, touching countless lives through her kindness, compassion, and unwavering devotion.
Sharon built a life full of love and laughter with her husband and best friend, Don Hiatt. Together they shared forty-seven wonderful years and raised five children: Stacy, Kevin, Ashley, Scott, and Eric. Their home was filled with love, laughter, music, and memories that will last forever. Sharon was the heart of her family - humorous, selfless, and endlessly loving.
She had a special gift for making others smile and laugh, no matter the circumstances. She helped others find hope through their trials and found joy herself in the simple things - beautifying her home and garden, soaking in the sunshine at the beach, and most of all, being a mother. Shortly before her passing she said, "My greatest accomplishment in life was being a mom. It was what made me the most happy."
Even in the hardest moments of her illness, she never stopped showing her family and friends what love looks like. She smiled through pain, found gratitude in small things, and reminded us all to be kind, patient, and brave. Her strength and faith will forever guide us.
Sharon leaves behind her loving husband, Don Hiatt - her high school sweetheart, longest friend, and eternal companion; her five children, Stacy Hiatt, Kevin (Sara) Hiatt, Ashley (Kevin) Movius, Scott (Cassie) Hiatt, Eric (Samantha) Hiatt; her sixteen grandchildren, Justin, Lily, Rubi, Jessica, Pierce, Elise, Tyson, Cade, Tess, Nixon, Bruce, Ivy, Maisie, Remi, Summer, and Harper. She is also survived by her parents, Alyene and Haywood Young of Mt. Airy, and her brother, Teddy (Barbara) Young. She joins loved ones in peace, surrounded by the same love she gave so freely here on earth.
We'll be gathering to remember her life on November 15th, 2025, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 3719 Pinetop Rd,
Greensboro, NC 27410.
The Hiatt family will receive visitors at 11:30am, with services commencing at 1:00pm.
We'll share stories, shed some tears, and of course there will be laughter- just the way she would want. In lieu of flowers, please take time to reach out to an old friend or family member and tell them you love them.
Mom, thank you for everything - for the love, the lessons, the laughter, and the endless warmth you brought into our lives. You were everything to us. You still are.
