Sharon Hope Merrifield, affectionately known as “Aunt Shockie,” , age 81 of Louisville, KY, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2025. She was a loving mother, sister, aunt, and friend to many.

Sharon was born November 1, 1943, in Frenchburg, KY. Early on she worked at the Toddle House, where she once had the opportunity to serve breakfast to Colonel Sanders himself—an encounter she loved to recount. She fondly remembered him pulling up in his white Cadillac and complimenting her on the wonderful breakfast she had prepared.

Later, Sharon worked for Bellsouth as a dispatch clerk, this is a job she held for many years until retiring in 2005. She cherished her co-workers and built many lasting friendships. She enjoyed laughing and having fun with them.

Sharon earned the nickname “Aunt Shockie” when one of her young nieces or nephews couldn’t pronounce “Sharon,” and the name stuck ever since. To those who knew her, she was truly the best aunt in the world. She created countless cherished memories—from letting her nieces and nephews “drive” from her lap through Cherokee Park, to annual sky lift trips up to Natural Bridge, and countless visits to Kings Island, where she always convinced them to ride her favorite roller coaster, “The Beast.”

A passionate U of L basketball fan, Sharon proudly displayed a photo of herself with her favorite coach, Denny Crum, on her refrigerator—where it remains to this day. She was also deeply interested in both local and world events, faithfully reading the Courier Journal and never missing an evening broadcast of World News Tonight with David Muir.

Sharon was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas “Tommy” Ray Merrifield; her parents, Charles and Elva Jane Byrd; her aunt, Golden Rose; her brother, Samuel Byrd; and sisters, Rosemary Barnes and Ruth Ann Ross, along with many other beloved relatives.

Sharon leaves behind her precious daughter, Samantha Michelle Byrd; her brothers, James Byrd (Mary) and Arne Byrd (Alice); and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will carry her memory forward—each of them blessed by her unconditional love.

A Memorial Gathering will be held from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals and Receptions, East Louisville Chapel, 235 Juneau Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40243.

Sharon will be missed dearly but the family is comforted in knowing she is resting in the arms of her savior.
