Shaun Phelps, age 40, of Akron, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on August 12, 2025. Shaun was born June 29th, 1985, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Al and Diann Phelps.
Shaun joined the United States Army in 2008 and served as an Infantryman until his honorable discharge in 2012. During that time, Shaun spent 9 months serving in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. After Shaun’s service in the Army, he joined the United States National Guard and served until his honorable discharge in 2018.
Shaun was an experienced machinist who excelled in his trade, gaining knowledge and experience as he moved from machine shop to machine shop across Michigan and more recently, Ohio. Chasing opportunities excited him and it gave him the opportunity to learn a new skill or a new machine.
Shaun loved nature and spending time outdoors, riding motorcycles and quads, shooting guns, camping, hiking, and honing his survival skills. Shaun loved spending time with his son, Gabriel, more than anything. Shaun genuinely enjoyed teaching him life skills like how to fix cars and motorcycles. The hobby that both Shaun and Gabe shared was love and joy in spending countless hours playing video games together, with family, extended family, and friends or anyone who would play with him.
Shaun was spontaneous and was known to his family and friends for his spur of the moment weekend trips, with no real plan other than he ended up there. Recently, he went to New York City because he wanted to and it was close. He also followed the same recipe in early August, ending up in Washington DC, spending the weekend there taking in the sights and the history. Shaun was energetic, caring, smart, adventurous and understanding. He had excellent social skills and always seemed to make the best of any situation. Shaun will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Shaun is survived by his loving son, Gabriel Phelps; his parents, Al and Diann; siblings, Sheila (Tom) Phelps and Alan Phelps Jr; nephews, Jake and Robert; niece, Valorie; as well as many friends and family members.
Shaun was preceded in death by his grandparents.
