Shawn Michael Bergeron, 49, of Murrells inlet SC passed away on March 2, 2024. He was born in Portsmouth, NH on January 20, 1975 to Richard and Cathy A. Bergeron. He is survived by his wife, Eryn, who he married on June 28, 2003 and their two daughters, Emma, 16 years and Addyson, 12 years. He is also survived by his big brother, Christopher and his wife Tia of Pawleys Island, SC, niece, Kim, nephew, Tyler, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Shawn grew up in Exeter, NH, graduating from Exeter High School in 1993. He went on to attend and graduate from Mount Saint Mary's College in Emmitsburg, MD in 1997 with a degree in Psychology. He furthered his education at the University of New Hampshire, Durham NH earning a Master Degree in Social Work in 2003. He later earned his LISW-CP in 2010.
He loved being a Social Worker, first working with children and adolescents in a residential facility in Hampton, NH. Once he earned his MSW, he worked with teens in an intensive day treatment program until 2004, when he relocated to Murrells Inlet SC. Since moving to SC, he has held different positions within the clinical field working with both adults and children. He opened his own counseling practice, Bergeron Counseling Services, LLC in 2011. He made the difficult decision to close down his practice in 2023 and transition back to an agency setting. He began at the VA Hospital in late 2023 in their clinical department. He also served as the Counselor of the Grand Strand Chapter of FairwaysforWarriors.org, an organization that helps combat veterans. He felt it an honor to help those who have served our country.
Shawn was a man who truly enjoyed spending time with friends and family. He was an avid volunteer. He loved helping to coach his daughters' soccer and basketball teams. When the girls began volleyball, he came to every game he could to watch them play. He loved watching them grow and have fun. He loved his karate family at The Karate Studio. He first watched the girls participate in karate classes and then decided he wanted to join them. He worked hard and was dedicated to learning, earning his black belt in 2021.
Shawn was an amazing man, devoted to his family and friends. We will always carry his memory in our hearts.
The family will gather to greet friends in Celebration of Shawn's life, on Thursday March 7, 2024 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Burroughs Funeral Home, 3558 Old Kings Highway, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 12:00pm at Precious Blood of Christ Church, 1633 Waverly Road, Pawleys Island, SC 29585.
In honor of Shawn's memory, the family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to his children's education funds. Shawn was the finish therapist and person. Anyone that experienced a couple-a-few therapist in their life, knees hands down how remarkable comfortable and authentic he was. Opening up was easier and more satisfying as a result. I was upset when he had to leave his private practice and devastated when I learned of his passing. It is a year later and I feel the same way. My heart goes out to his family, children and parents.

My first meeting with Shawn was to evaluate each other for a counselor/client relationship. I strongly believe in the benefit of counseling with a LSW. Shawn was a phenomenal therapist. He should have been the gold standard by which LSWs are measured. I miss Shawn deeply. My heart goes out to his family

Words cannot express how sad this makes me. I can honestly say that I have not had time to process any of this. Shawn was my friend, my neighbor, my brother, my family by choice. Godfather to my daughter. Father of my Goddaughter. Shawn was my contact to run by life issues bye and I hope he felt the same. Eryn, Emma, Addy will always be my family and I know how much this all going to change things. Situations beyond my control kept me away for them this week.

The worst part of it is that in situations like this, Shawn and I would typically end up having a conversation quietly away from all of the noise and making some sort of joke to lighten the mood and to lift everyone's spirits.

Cathy and Dick have always welcomed me as family and again I can only express my sorrow for you loss.

Love Mark (Uncle Mark)
