Sheila Collins Ingle, 77, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 5, 2025, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Born on February 22, 1948, in Charleston, SC, Sheila was the daughter of the late Samuel Moore Collins and Evelyn Cox Collins. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert Crittenden Collins.
Sheila is survived by her beloved husband, John Ingle; her son, Scott Ingle; and her stepdaughters, Michelle Albanese and her children, Alyssa and Michael Albanese; and Teresa Fortner (Jeff) and their children, Jennifer and Will Fortner. She is also survived by her brother, Lee Collins (Beth), and their children: Blaire Jett (Kevin) and children; Carter Collins (Kelly) and children; Alexander Collins (Haleigh); and Anna Collins. Additional survivors include her sister-in-law, Carol Collins, and nephew Ryan Collins (Lauren) and their daughters, Bailey and Mary Catherine.
Sheila leaves behind many cousins who were dear to her: Owen Kirkwood Hitt of Louisville, KY; Steve Collins of Flagstaff, AZ; Mac Hubley of Mossy Head, FL; Kathy Ehrle of Ohio; and Robert Collins of Charleston, SC.
Sheila earned both her Bachelor of Arts in English (with minors in psychology and religion) and her Master of Arts in Teaching in Humanities from Converse College. A devoted educator, she taught for over thirty years, sharing her love of literature, history, and storytelling with students in kindergarten through college. For more than 20 years, she was a beloved faculty member at the University of South Carolina Upstate.
A passionate reader and natural storyteller, Sheila authored five books, including Courageous Kate and Tales of a Cosmic Possum, drawing from her love of South Carolina history. She was a proud and active member of several lineage societies, including the Daughters of the American Revolution (Kate Moore Barry Chapter), the Colonial Dames, and the Daughters of 1812.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. Sheila poured her heart into Bible study, teaching, and service at her home church, First Baptist of Spartanburg, where she led classes for all ages—from toddlers to adult women. She also served on the board of the South Carolina Historical Society and was a past member of Children’s Cancer Partners.
A celebration of Sheila’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 2025, in the Davis Chapel of First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302. Visitation will take place beforehand from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the church parlor. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Children’s Cancer Partners, 900 S. Pine Street, Suite F, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
