Susan (Shelley) Michele Whitaker made Tyler her home for 35 years, after previously living in White Oak, Texas. Shelley was a devoted member of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, where her faith and fellowship were an important part of her life. She had a deep love for all plants and animals, a passion that touched those who knew her.

She received her Associate of Applied Science from TJC, with magna cum laude honors, and then became a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor for 11 years. She also worked as a Veterinary Technician, combining her professional skills with her compassion for animals.

Shelley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wilton Lee Whitaker, and her father, Gerald W. Powell, Sr.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Lake & Mari Whitaker and Triston Cy & Hillary Whitaker; mother, Donna Sue Stites Powell; siblings, Shannon Smallwood and husband, Steve, Stephanie Powell, and Gerald Wayne Powell, Jr.; and her grandchildren, Malayah Whitaker (5), Cyrah Whitaker (11 months), and Rocket Whitaker (2 weeks). She also leaves behind other close relatives, including her mother-in-law, Marie Whitaker; step-son, Daniel Whitaker; and nieces and nephews, Zach Smallwood, Holly Smallwood, Chase Powell, Whitney Wood and Blake Powell.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to SPCA East Texas or Hospice of East Texas in her memory. Shelley's life was defined by her love for family, faith, and a kind spirit that will be missed by all who knew her.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at Bethel Bible Church, Downtown Campus, located on the 3rd floor of The Foundry Coffee House: 202 S. Broadway Ave, Tyler, Texas 75702.
