He was educated in the Wayne County Training School and continued his education in Brunswick Junior College. Rev. Childers was united in holy matrimony to his high school sweetheart, Anita Flowers-Childers on June 10, 1961, and to this union, one son was born, Sherman O. Childers, Jr.

He served as the Pastor of St. James AME Church in Glennville, Ga. from 1988-1998 and at Gaines Chapel AME Church in Douglas, Ga. from 2001-2014. He was an active member of Mt. Mariah AME Church until his health would no longer allow him to attend as he did normally. In his free time, Rev. Childers enjoyed reading and watching Westerns.
