Sherman Hodges, entrepreneur and long-distance runner; of Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, formerly of Skokie; passed away peacefully and surrounded by the love of family on July 11, 2025 (one day before his 90th birthday).
Loving father of Meegan Hodges of Los Angeles and Aaron Hodges of Chicago, fond father-in-law of Slash, and adoring and proud grandfather of the late Lucy-Bleu Knight and Scarlet Rae Knight and Madison Luciana "Lucci" (Luke) Cicero.
Dear friend and former spouse of Annette "Toni" Tischler, brother-in-law of Barrie "Bones" Martin and Dorie Hodges, and "Uncle Sherm" of many.
Son of the late Milton "Mickey" and Shirley (nee Cooper) Hodges. Brother of the late Iris (the late Walter) Halperin, and Marshall and Alan Hodges.
Born in Chicago, raised on the West Side of Chicago, Sherman graduated from Marshall High School and served in the U.S. Army as part of Operation Glory, repatriating human remains from the Korean War from 1954-55.
With his former spouse, Sherman owned That Hair Shoppe in Piper's Alley. The couple did hairdressing and design for the Chicago premiere of the musical "HAIR". Later, along with his identical twin brother Marshall, he ran Lulu's Hot Diggity Dog at Clybourn and Belmont. He would often treat local kids with good report cards to meals and was well-liked by the police officers who were regulars at the hot dog stand.
Inducted into Chicago's Runner's Hall of Fame and a veteran of over 70 ultra-marathons, Sherman participated in the Chicago's very first Marathon in 1977, but 26-miles was usually his warm-up. Sherman's favorite thing in the world was to light a doobie and hit the trail. He ran up until his late 70's when symptoms of a Parkinson's like disease compelled him to slow down.
Sherman would do anything for his family. He was a true character, and well-liked by all.
The family has chosen private cremation. Private burial of cremated remains with military honors is being planned.
