The family of Sherrie Rachel Crone of Tiger is deeply saddened to announce her passing at age 76. Born to the late Dorothy A. and Jesse M. Welborn, she spent much of her life where her roots run deep in beautiful Rabun County. She was a 1968 graduate of RCHS, later working at Winn-Dixie, Fruit of the Loom, and the AID Corporation until finally retiring in 2013. After retirement, she became an in-home caregiver to many whom she referred to as her “sweet friends.”
Affectionately known as “Nana,” Sherrie was an excellent cook, famous for her coconut cake and dressing with gravy. In a perfect world, you could never have too much Tupperware, and her crockpots were like family. Pepsi and Little Debbies were must-haves, and she had a soft spot for animals, wild or domestic. When you were sick, she was always there, soup and ginger ale in-hand, ready to cure your ailments. Her favorite pastime was watching Crime TV and cooking shows. Sherrie’s devotion to family will forever be cherished, and her strong will, never forgotten. She was of the Baptist faith.
Sherrie leaves behind three daughters, Retia Merino (Raul), Angie Swiencicki (Adam), and Claudia Penland (Christopher Grodde); grandchildren Natalie (Isaac), Kenneth, BJ (Jennifer), Connor, Tori, Chris (Victoria), Christopher, Anna, Christian (Emily), Rachel, Victoria, Isabella, and Emerald; and 14 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, a nephew, and cousins, and her best friend she lovingly referred to as “Little Grandma.”
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the Eastside Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Liberty Community Cemetery.
