Shirley Beard Obituary
She was the owner of Shirley Mae's Cafe, Smoketown Liquors and the founder of Salute to Black Jockeys.
She is survived by her children, William Simpson and his wife Irma, Theresa Simpson, Dee Simpson, Edveta Simpson, Pamela Simpson, Warren Simpson and her beloved dog, Java; grandchildren, Christopher Simpson, Jessica Bellamy and Lynnette Fraser and her husband Elwyn; great-grandchildren, Eloy and Elyas Fraser, and a host of family and friends.
Visitation: 5:30pm-8:30pm Friday, January 24, 2025 at Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs, 704 Central Ave. Funeral: 12pm Saturday, January 25, 2025 at Community Missionary Baptist Church in Newburg, 4909 E. Indian Trail. Burial: Cave Hill Cemetery.
Arrangements entrusted to A. D. Porter & Sons Funeral Home, 1300 W. Chestnut St.

This is Clara Braxton Manso. My memory is when she organized her salute to black jockeys annually. They were the original jockeys before the big money was paid. I am so glad she brought them back to the forefront for so many years. Otherwise they would have been buried away like so much of our history
