Shirley Ann Bentsen, 95, a resident of Silver City, NM peacefully entered eternal rest Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at her residence. She was born May 18, 1929 in Detroit, MI to George Edgar Lane and Lucy DeGray Lane.
Shirley was a working mother in the 1960s and 70s. Beginning her career at Michigan Bell Telephone, she later retired from EDS in the early 1980s. During her time at Michigan Bell and EDS, she was a supportive and caring presence for her colleagues. Beyond her career and family, Shirley was active in several organizations. She held leadership roles in the women's version of the Mason's Masonic Temple, the Shrine of the White Flower, and after moving to the Southwest in the mid-1980s, she joined the local Elks Lodge in Silver City, New Mexico. There, she served as Chaplain for many terms. When her health necessitated stepping down, she continued her service in a different role for the Elks.
Shirley embraced the beauty of the Western desert while exploring Arizona and New Mexico. She considered her friends a part of the family. She also enjoyed attending craft shows and appreciating the work of local artists. Shirley found a true home in her New Mexico community and lived a contented and fulfilling life.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Sue Been for her years of devoted friendship and compassionate caregiving.
Shirley is survived by two sons, Palmer Arthur Bentsen III of Atlanta, MI; David Bentsen of Warren, MI; one daughter, Diane Shepard and husband Rob of Louisville, CO; three grandchildren, Connor Shepard, Matthew Bentsen and Lindsay Bentsen. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Pamela Brown; one brother, Kenneth Lane.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date in Michigan.
Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels and Crematory "Trusted care for the ones you love" ~ 575-537-0777. To send condolences, visit www.terrazasfuneralchapel.com.
