Shirley Cavender Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wilson Mortuary - Salem on Nov. 24, 2025.
Shirley Ann (Mayfield) Cavender, the daughter of Wayman Howard and Dorothy (Higdon) Mayfield, was born January 14, 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri. She has many fond memories on the family farm in St. James where she graduated high school. After graduation, Shirley moved to her grandparents' home on the Current River.

On November 6, 1999, Shirley was united in marriage to Elija "Bill" William Cavender. This union blended two families and together they shared six children: Danny, Susan, Kevin, Mark, Jason, and Becky. Shirly and Bill were blessed with twenty-six years of marriage and lasting memories.

In her late teens and into her early twenties, Shirley started working at the International Shoe Factory and Hagale Industries. From 2001-2003 she ironed shirts at Personal Touch Cleaners and then retired.

In her retirement, Shirley enjoyed traveling alongside Bill when they were able. They visited most of Southern Illinois, Virginia, and West Virginia. Shirley loved music. She enjoyed singing, playing guitar, and piano, often with a group in her home. As a group they liked singing at local charity benefits.

As a talented seamstress, she enjoyed sewing, especially clothing for her children when they were younger. She loved to garden and tend to her flower beds. Most important to her were her faith in the Lord, beloved family, and dear friends. She treasured her grandchildren and adored her great-grandchildren.

Shirley entered into eternal rest November 21, 2025, at her home in Salem, Missouri, at the age of eighty-one years. She is survived by her loving husband: Bill Cavender of Salem, MO; children: Danny Webber of Annapolis, MO, Susan Matthews of Salem, MO, Kevin Webber and wife Brenda of Annapolis, MO, Mark Webber of Annapolis, MO, Jason Webber of Salem, MO; and Becky Britton of Salem, MO; brother: Richard Holliday of Salem, MO; sister: Catherine Bellew and husband Doug of Fredericktown, MO; many beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents: Wayman "Howard" and Dorothy (Higdon) Mayfield; daughter: Trisha Boulch; and sister: Debbie Camden.

Shirley was always welcoming and a joy to be around. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by those who knew and loved her.
