Shirley Derrington Obituary

Publish in a newspaper

Shirley Joan Derrington, affectionately known as Joan to her friends and family, left this world at the age of 87 on the 10th of September, 2025. Born on the 4th of August, 1938, in St. Elmo, Illinois, JoAnn graced this earth with her presence, warmth, and unwavering kindness.

Joan passed away peacefully in Evansville, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family who cherished every moment spent with her. Her journey through life was one marked by devotion and joy, bringing light and love to everyone she met.

Marriage was a defining chapter of Joan's life. She was married to her soulmate, Keith Derrington, for a remarkable 62 years, sharing a love that was as significant as it was inspiring. Their love story began over a simple hamburger at the curb hop while Keith was home from the service, and it blossomed into a lifetime of shared memories and unconditional support.

Joan's legacy includes her beloved granddaughter, Amanda Derrington, who she raised with all the care and affection in the world. Amanda, alongside her husband Bradley Williams, was a source of immense pride and joy for Joan. She was also a dedicated mother to her son, Chris Derrington, and she instilled in him the values of family, love, and compassion. Joan also leaves behind her extremely close friends "The Group" that she has shared a lifelong friendship with. The memories they shared brought such joy and laughter to Joan and Keith. Joan truly cherished the nearly 60 years of friendship they had together.

Preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Mary Stubblefield, Joan leaves behind a bond of love with her brother, David Stubblefield, and his wife, Marilyn; and her cherished nephew, Ben Lancaster. JoAnn's family was the cornerstone of her existence, and she nurtured each relationship with grace and selflessness.

Being part of the Central High School class of 1956 was a point of pride for Joan. She carried the spirit of her alma mater with her throughout her life, often reflecting on the experiences and friendships that shaped her formative years.

Joan found her calling in the irreplaceable role of homemaker and matriarch, dedicating her life to creating a warm, welcoming home for her family. She approached every responsibility with diligence and love, ensuring that her family felt supported and cherished in her presence. Her engagement within her community was marked by generosity and a readiness to help, always extending a hand to those in need.

Her interests were simple yet profound; Joan loved taking care of her family above all else. It was in the quiet moments, the everyday routines, and the family gatherings where JoAnn found her greatest joy and fulfillment. The echoes of her laughter and the wisdom of her counsel will be deeply missed but will live on in the hearts of those she inspired.

As we bid farewell to Shirley Joan "Joan" Derrington, we honor a life beautifully lived, a heart generously loved, and a family profoundly cherished. Her spirit will forever be remembered as a guiding light and a source of comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing her. The world is truly better for having had Joan in it, and her legacy of love and devotion will continue to resonate through generations.

Keith and the family would like to thank Compassus Hospice group for their kindness during this difficult time.
