Shirley Russell Estes

Shirley Russell Estes, 83, of Madison, died Monday, March 16, 2009, at his residence.

He was born July 31, 1925, in Pratts, Madison County, the son of the late John Creel Estes and Georgia Herndon Estes. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Creel Estes Jr.; and a sister, Elinor Estes Judd.

Shirley was a barber and stone mason for many years. Mr. Estes was an Elder and Chairman of the Board for Rochelle Christian Church. He was an United States Army Air Force Veteran of World War II and a member of the Madison American Legion Post #157.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Nixon Estes of Madison; his daughter, Jill Denise Estes of Grottoes; five sons, Stewart Russell Estes of Columbus, Kentucky, Jay Wayne Estes of South Hill, Virginia, Craig Nixon Estes and Darrell Tyler Estes, both of Madison, Darren Spencer Estes of Wolftown; one sister, Barbara Estes Reyer of Pratts; 10 grand-children and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 20, 2009, at Rochelle Christian Church with interment at church cemetery. The Reverend Ken Morton will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Madison.
