Shirley Anne (DeMars) Fitzloff, age 91, of Mankato passed away on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at Laurels Peak, Mankato.
Funeral Service will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at the Mankato Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, St. Clair. Memorials preferred to Blue Earth County Historical Society.
Shirley was born on July 16, 1932, in Rockford, Illinois to Leo and Antonia (Iverson) DeMars. In 1933 her family moved to Elk River, MN and then to St. Clair, MN in 1945. On June 11, 1949, she was united in marriage to James A. Fitzloff at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Clair, MN. Shirley and James raised their family in St. Clair.
Shirley worked at the Fitzloff Drug Store in St. Clair, Immanuel/St. Josephs Hospital as a nursing assistant and did home care in Mankato, then to Midtex in North Mankato.
Following her husband’s death in 1990 she remarried in 1998 to Lyle Halberg. Shirley and Lyle had homes in Mankato, MN and Pharr, TX. Until the death of Lyle in 2008.
Shirley was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Clair, the Mankato Moose Lodge #475 and also the Blue Earth County Historical Society and the VFW in Mankato. She loved taking videos on her video camera of family and friends and was known for her enormous collection of pictures of family and friends. She loved and had such a caring heart and helped anyone in need.
Shirley is survived by her children, Gregory of St. Clair, Roxanne Seys of Mankato, Richard
“Dick” of St. Clair, and Jackie of North Mankato; six grandchildren, Stephanie, Jason, Stacey, Mandy, Ryan and Heather, as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; sisters, Kathy (Tom) Wright of Virginia, Jan (Lowell) Ellis of Mankato, and Patty (Tony) Staloch of Janesville; special friend, Don Elfering of Holding Ford.
Shirley was preceded in death by infant son, Lee James; son, James Lee; parents; husband, James, and husband, Lyle; mother and father in-law, Jack and Olie Fitzloff; brother, Laverne DeMars; sisters, Joyce Hill, Donna Danberry, Darlene Kulseth, Rose Marie Loeffler, and Jackie Haley; sister-in-law, Hazel DeMars; brothers-in-law, Bud Hill, Jack Danberry, Bob Kulseth, Jim Loeffler, Mark Haley, and Lowell Ellis.
The family would like to thank Mayo Clinic Health System, Mankato, her caregiver, Dani Larson, Mayo Hospice, Laurels Peak Rehabilitation Center as well as many others who helped our mother in many special ways.
