Shirley Woodruff Guglielmo
Vienna, Virginia
February13, 1934 - March 5, 2022
Our beloved mother Shirley Woodruff Guglielmo entered God's Kingdom on March 5, 2022 after an unexpected abdominal aneurysm.
She was born to Melvin David Woodruff and Effie Eudora Wolfe on February13, 1934 in Jackson County Michigan in the Sherer family farmhouse. She was the second youngest of seven siblings.(David, Robert, Thomas, Margaret, Hellen, and Kay) When she was younger she liked to go fishing with her dad, and played in the marsh across from Bates street where she grew up with the neighbors. Her dad was a barber and this is where she learned to cut hair at a very young age and learned to give perms. This activity continued into her 80's. Shirley also loved to dance.
She attended Jackson High School and graduated in 1952. Her father died at a young age, she became her handicapped mother's caretaker along with her younger brother Robert. She took on many jobs to pay the mortgage on the house at Bates street.
She learned shorthand and became a Stenographer and worked for Commonwealth Associates in Jackson Michigan on thyroid and radiation research. This is where she met Emil Guglielmo and after a short courtship in 1956 they were married in Angola, Indiana. Together they traveled the east coast and ended up in Vienna, Virginia.
Their family increased with three children, Michael Emil Guglielmo, Kimberly Ann (nee Guglielmo) Gunderman, and David Robert Guglielmo. She worked at Planning Research Corporation in McLean, Virginia for many years.
Shirley became a devoted coache's spouse and held batting practice in the batting cage which was located in the backyard for many years. She also worked the stands at Yoenas, Glyndon, and Waters Field. She became friends and worked with Freddy Crabtree and together they walked many parcels of land in and around Vienna and decided on what land became the parks that are being used today. The two that she was most impressed with are the locations of Nottoway and Oakmarr Park. She was impressed with the beauty and the owners upkeep of the land and what it had to offer for many to enjoy for years to come.
Shirley and Emil were married for 65 years until his death on January 14, 2022. Shirley is survived by her daughter Kimberly (Brian Gunderman), sons Michael (nee Elizabeth Bergum), David (nee Karen Collins), grandchildren Christopher, Kyle (nee Alena Kavalets), Brandon (nee Katherine Harper), Thomas (nee Alexa Stickles), Andrew Guglielmo, and great grandchildren Luca, Maxim, Adelaide, Hayley and her sister Margaret Sharp Keagle.:
