Shirley Lorraine Halse, age 99, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, of Spearfish, SD formerly of Clear Lake, SD, passed away in Spearfish, SD, on October 2, 2025. A Memorial Service will be at 2 pm on Saturday, October 11, 2025 at the Clear Lake Methodist Church in Clear Lake, SD. Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD is entrusted with the arrangements.
Shirley Lorraine Halse was born in Plankinton, SD, on January 13, 1926, to Floyd and Mildred (Burst) Coombs. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Plankinton High School. After graduation she attended Micthell Business College and then moved to Corvallis, OR. She worked for Meadowland Creamery where she met Alvin Halse.
They were married on May 23, 1946. They moved to Clear Lake, SD, in November 1946. There they joined Lloyd Halse in operating the Clear Lake Dairy and Locker which became Halse's Grocery Store. Al and Shirley retired in 1977 and began wintering in McAllen, TX, and moved there permanently in 1991. In 2006, they returned to Clear Lake. After Al's death in 2007, she continued to reside in Clear Lake until 2014 when she moved to Spearfish to be closer to her son and his wife, Darrell and Marilyn.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, brother Darwin, husband Alvin, and son Darrell.
Shirley is survived by her son Richard Halse, daughter-in-law Marilyn Halse; two granddaughters, Wendy (Eric) Thorson and Becky (Corey) Ochsner; four great-grandchildren, Miranda and Joshua Thorson and Carter and Tanner Ochsner and many nieces and nephews.
