Shirley Herendeen, a loved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away on August 17, 2025, at the age of 88. She was known for her love of family and her generosity. Born in Circlehill, Ohio, south of Nelsonville, at home on November 22, 1936, she had a long life of dedication to others. Shirley worked side by side with her late husband, William Herendeen, to run W.B. Herendeen, Inc. for decades. Providing coal, stone, and sand to the local area for homes, Interstate 70, Denison University, Grant Hospital, Wyantt Greenhouse, and more. They also ran the family farm together while raising their children. Later, she worked for General Business Services in Granville, Ohio, and at Northwest Worthington Library. Shirley was well known for taking pride in her family and work.
Shirley is survived by her children: Dale Herendeen (Wanda), Jean HerendeenAckerman, Daniel Carpenter (Amanda), and grandchildren Jennifer and David. She also leaves behind her dear friends Janey, Neatha, and Ardeth, as well as many nieces and nephews. She has now joined her late husband, William Herendeen; her son, John Herendeen; her grandson, Keith; and her parents, Verna and Henry Barnhart.
In place of flowers, please take the time to do something nice for someone. For that was the philosophy both she and her late husband Bill followed every day. If you wish, donations to any cancer foundation in her name would be appreciated. She won the battle with that, but others need support.
A simple graveside service will be held Saturday, December 20, at 11 AM at Maple Grove Cemetery. The procession will start at McPeek Hoekstra Hoskinson Funeral Home of Granville, Ohio. This is in conjunction with her son-in-law, Paul Ackerman’s services. A gathering at her daughter’s home will be held afterwards.
