Shirley Lunt Obituary Shirley Ann Lunt, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away on June 2, 2025, at the age of 92 at River Hills Nursing Home. She was born on October 9, 1932, to Charles Lester and Hazel Schieferdecker. She married her high school sweetheart, Ronald Dean Lunt, on September 23, 1951. They moved from
Quincy, IL, to
Keokuk, IA, in 1956, with their two-year-old daughter, Kathy, where their first home was an upstairs apartment at the Miller House.
A lifelong member of the Assemblies of God, Shirleys faith was her foundation, and she carried it with love and devotion throughout her entire life. For many years, she was an active member of the Keokuk Assembly of God, where she served in many capacities, including President of the Womens Ministries, Sunday School teacher, and leader of the Missionettes girls club. Her home was a welcoming place for many, hosting countless slumber parties for young girls in her basement and an open door for all the church teens to hang out. In her later years, Shirley became a faithful member of the Warsaw Assembly of God, where she blessed others by playing the piano during worship services. Her support for youth and children's ministries, along with her heartfelt contributions to various missionaries, left an enduring impact on her church community.
Shirley was also deeply involved in her local community. She was a member of the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary and a participant in the quilters club. Shirley lovingly created quilts for her entire family, as well as quilted bags for foster children. She loved sewing for her family, creating beautiful dresses for her children and granddaughters, and many Hawaiian shirts for her grandsons. In 1989, she made 55 Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls for her grandchildren and friends, a treasured keepsake that they hold dear to this day.
A dedicated worker, Shirley spent many years in retail at Spiegel and Woolworth before retiring, but it was in her role as a mother and grandmother where her true legacy shines. Family was everything to Shirley. She loved to gather with her loved ones to play card games, including Rook, Upwords, Rummikub, Farkle, and many others, always cherishing the time spent together. During the cold winter months, she enjoyed the quiet joy of piecing together puzzles with anyone who stopped by.
Shirleys life was a testament to her unshakable faith and her devotion to those she loved. She spent her days praising Jesus with a grateful heart and was always quick to say, 'I'm blessed, blessed, blessed.' Her unwavering belief in the goodness of God was evident in everything she did. Even on her final day, she praised Him with her whole heart.
Shirley is survived by her four daughters: Kathy (Dave) Coovert, Karen (Ed) Szawiel, Teresa Gilbert, and Lisa (Terry) Massey. She was a proud grandmother to 12 grandchildren: Aaron (Sara) Coovert, Bethany Haage, Alex (Denise) Coovert, Jared (Megan) Massey, Emilee (Eric) McElroy, Kelsi (Cory) Lowman, Josh (Beth) Massey, Carly (Arjay) Vander Velden, Kenzi (Brandon) Weddle, Daniel (Teju) Gilbert, Violet Gilbert, and Dustin Gilbert. Shirleys legacy also lives on through her 21 great-grandchildren: Hannah Rose, Luke, Nathan, Rachel, Reagan, Micah, Owen, Scarlett, Zachary, Eric, Christine, Mia, Mylo, Abe, Hazel, Riley, Klementine, Joshua II, Bennett, Cordell, and Sophia. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and numerous special friends who were touched by her love and kindness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Ronald, her grandson Jeffrey, and her sister and brother.
Shirley will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her faith, her love, and the memories of her caring spirit will continue to inspire her family and friends for generations to come.
