Shirley Mae Mahs, age 89, of Hillsdale, previously of Garden City, passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at her home. She was born on February 7, 1936, in Wyandotte, Michigan, to Chester and Ruth (Knerr) Palmer. She married William H, Mahs on October 13, 1965, and he preceded her in death on July 19, 1998.
Shirley worked several jobs over the years including being a car hopper, a lunch lady at Garden City Schools, and as a secretary at her husband's business, New Boston Heating and Cooling. She was an active member at the Dearborn Moose Lodge for many years and loved going there to line dance. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. Shirley loved traveling and would take solo road trips to go see friends and family. She was a very active mother and grandmother and made sure to show up to all the games, dance recital, and Girl Scout events.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Carly Sayger; and three grandchildren, Holly (Lucas) Chamberlain, Marina (Sean) Walsh and Connor Sayger.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 32 years, William; a son, Richard Bell, and a son-in-law Fred Sayger.
There will be no service at this time for Shirley Mahs. Arrangements have been entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Greater Hillsdale Humane Society.
