It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley C. (Scaring) Marcil at the age of 97. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy (Burkhard) Scaring. She was lovingly married to Gilbert F. Marcil for 54 years, until his passing in 2016. Together they shared a love of travel-exploring Europe and Asia and creating cherished memories along the way. She was also predeceased by her cherished sister Louise O'Neil and devoted brother-in-law Thomas O'Neil, whose memory she held close to her heart. Shirley brought warmth, kindness and an ever-present smile to everyone she met. She graduated from Classical High School and received her RN from Springfield Hospital in 1950. She dedicated many years of compassionate service at Baystate Medical Center's Emergency Department, where she was recognized for her extraordinary care:
"Shirley has a great deal of patience with the patients. She goes out of her way to make sure patients understand what is happening-their care, their medications, necessary testing, etc. She is a good listener; her daily style is totally customer oriented."
She was also selected to Baystate Medical Center's All-Star Team, a distinction awarded by her peers:
"You can be truly proud that your fellow staff members have chosen you as one of Baystate's best. Known for giving that extra effort and going the extra mile, you are distinguished in a very special way and your efforts deserve the highest commendation."
Following her retirement, Shirley continued to share her caring nature as volunteer at the Longmeadow Senior Center, offering both her nursing expertise and gentle spirit. She also volunteered at the Storrowton Tavern Gift Shop, where her gracious presence and kind disposition were deeply appreciated by staff and visitors alike. Shirley is survived by sister-in-law Sandra Matthews of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, and by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and great-great grandnieces and great-great grandnephews. Shirley's family extends heartfelt gratitude to Paula Reynolds for her loving and compassionate care of Shirley, and to Brookhaven Hospice for their support.
