Shirley Jean McPhail, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by love on June 2, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on August 7, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, she was the cherished daughter of the late Carl and Margaret (Bittner) Kersten.
She was a guiding light, a dear friend, a storyteller, a quiet source of wisdom, and the heart of her family. Her laughter, warmth, and endless love will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Gifted in conversation, she could strike up a warm and friendly chat with anyone, anywhere. Her lively spirit and welcoming nature made her a friend to all. Whether bowling a perfect game, dancing to her favorite tunes, or lending her beautiful voice to the church choir, Shirley embraced life with joy and enthusiasm.
She was a devoted member of her church, a passionate gardener with a green thumb, and an avid reader who enjoyed a good puzzle or crossword. But more than anything, she adored her grandchildren, who brought her endless pride and happiness.
For the last three years, Shirley was a beloved resident of the South Lyon Senior Care Center, where she developed deep and lasting bonds. To those who cared for her and lived alongside her, she wasn't just a resident-she was family.
Shirley married the love of her life, Jim McPhail, after they met at Edgewater Park. This marked the beginning of a beautiful love story that blossomed into 54 years of marriage, lasting until Jim's passing in 2008. Together, they built a wonderful life and family, starting in Detroit and eventually settling in Livonia for many years. Along the way, Jim and Shirley made many lasting friends and cherished memories.
Shirley is survived by her loving children, Carol Duman and Jim (Cindy) McPhail; her cherished grandchildren, Bobby (Jennifer) Duman, Jennifer (Graham) Hogan, Carly McPhail, and Ryan (Alli) McPhail; and her beloved great-grandchildren, McKenna, Savannah, Cameron, Ada, Ella, and Becca. Sadly, she was preceded in death by her dear son, John McPhail; her husband, Jim McPhail; and her son-in-law, Bob Duman.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, June 8th, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home. A luncheon will follow at 2:00 PM at Corsi's in Livonia.
An interment will take place Monday morning, June 9, at Parkview Memorial, with guests meeting at the gates at 9:30 am.
Donations may be directed to Angela Hospice to further honor Shirley's life.
