Shirley Murphy

Her Story
Mrs. Shirley Ann Murphy passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 8, 2022. Shirley was born on July 2, 1938, in Nashville, Tennessee to her parents, the late Fred and Julia McGee. She was one of four siblings including her deceased sisters, Oliva Hall and Allene Scott and her late brother, Thomas McGee. Shirley graduated from Pearl High School in Nashville and attended Tennessee State University. Shirley and her late husband, Matthew B. Murphy, Jr. moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1957, where she settled and raised her family.
Shirley retired in 2000 after a stellar professional career at Union Carbide Corp., The Oaks Academy and at Indianapolis Public Schools Administrative Services. Shirley was very active in multiple community and civic organizations, including Kiwanis International, having served as it's Indianapolis Chapter President, and she volunteered at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
Throughout her life, Shirley was a committed follower of Christ. For decades, she was a member of Kingsley Terrace Church of Christ, where she served in various ministries. In her later years, after becoming a resident of Eagle Valley Meadows, she attended Eagle Valley Church of Christ. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends and traveling. She was also an avid reader. She was a talented cook, especially for holiday occasions. Shirley was a wonderful caregiver to many family members and friends.
Shirley, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and dear friend, is survived by her children, Karen Elaine Myers, Matthew B. Murphy, III (Melissa), Angela Faye Perkins (Derrick), and David W. Murphy. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Alphonso C. Myers, III, Aaren C. Myers, Leah R. Murphy, Adam C. Myers, Matthew C. Murphy, IV, Tilailan Y. Downey, and Miles C. Murphy, and great-granddaughter, Ava Chantele Elaine Myers. Her loving memory will live in our hearts eternally, and she will be missed beyond measure.
