Cress Funeral Home & Cremation Services - StoughtonShirley Neugart, age 87, of Stoughton, Wisconsin, passed away on March 26, 2026. She was born on September 7, 1938, in Big Flats, Wisconsin, to the late Clarence and Rose Holmes.
Shirley grew up in the Adams - Friendship area and pursued her passion for education from a young age. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1964 and began her teaching career at Roche-a-Cri Grade School, where she taught until 1973. On June 23, 1973, she married Charles Neugart, and together they welcomed their son, Daniel, in 1974 and their daughter, Elisa, in 1976. The family moved from Madison to Stoughton in 1978, where Shirley and Charles built their life together. She returned to the classroom at Oaklawn Academy in 1985 until her retirement in 2002.
Shirley was a woman of many passions. She and Charles loved traveling the country for numerous years on their Honda Goldwing "Big Red”. They made various trips out to attend the annual GoldWing motorcycle event. In their later years they traveled the country in their RV, exploring new places, and camping along the way. She was an avid NASCAR fan who enjoyed attending multiple races, and she never turned down a trip to the casino. At home, she could often be found tending to her garden, working on her crochet and cross stitch projects, or settling in with a good book. Her deep love for animals was well known to all who knew her. Kind, compassionate, and strong willed, Shirley had a way of making everyone around her feel cared for and welcomed.
A woman of deep and abiding Christian faith, Shirley found strength and comfort in her relationship with the Lord throughout her life. Her faith guided her actions, shaped her generosity, and gave her peace. She now rests in the loving arms of her Savior.
Shirley is survived by her beloved husband, Charles Neugart; her son, Daniel (Jenny) Neugart, grandson Luke and granddaughter Emma; their daughter, Elisa (Jim) Hakala; and her sister, Ellen (Wayne) Schmidt, sister-in-law Patti Rhinehart; also survived by her niece, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Rose Holmes.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Stoughton Meadows Assisted Living and Bristol Hospice for all they did to care for Shirley during her final days.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026 at St. Ann Catholic Church, 323 N Van Buren St, Stoughton, Wisconsin with Fr. Randy Budnar presiding. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Shirley will be laid to rest at St. Ann Catholic Cemetery, with a reception to follow at church.
