GASTONIA - Shirley Flowe Newcombe, 87, of Gastonia, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025 surrounded by family. Born in Charlotte to Margaret and Edgar Flowe, Shirley lived a life defined by devotion to raising her four children, a passion for tennis, and creating cherished family memories at the beach.
She is survived by her sons Elliott Newcombe (Tami) and David Newcombe (Rusty); daughter Shelley Rutledge (Edward); 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and her brother, Eddie Flowe. Shirley was predeceased by her daughter, Elizabeth Newcombe.
Shirley was a vibrant presence in Charlotte's tennis community, serving as captain of the Women's Tennis C Team at the Charlotte Country Club for over 20 years. Her leadership, competitive spirit, and camaraderie on the court inspired teammates and friends alike. She found great joy in the game, forging bonds that lasted throughout her life. She was active in the Junior League of Charlotte, the Mint Museum, the Charlotte Debutante Club, the Nine O'Clocks, the Benedicts, and the Charlotte Country Club.
Shirley's family would like to thank staffs of VIA Health Partners (Hospice) and Visiting Angels for their care and compassion. The family will hold a private burial at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Shirley's memory can be made to the American Cancer Society.
