Shirley Jean Pappenheimer (nee Varner), a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on September 18, 1935, on Signal Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Shirley's journey through life was marked by love, laughter, and cherished connections with family and friends.
In her early years, Shirley's family moved to Cincinnati, where she met and married Ralph Pappenheimer. Their union blossomed into a strong partnership that not only enriched their lives but also brought forth a loving family that would be her source of pride and joy. She enjoyed the family business, Sports Connection, where Shirley's passion for sports shone brightly.
A devoted sports enthusiast, Shirley took great delight in watching the kids and grandkids play sports. She also enjoyed rooting for the Cincinnati Reds and Cincinnati Bengals, often sharing those moments with her family. Her vibrant spirit was evident in her love for games-whether it was a board game or cards; she relished the opportunity to gather with loved ones, creating memories filled with laughter and friendly competition.
As a self-proclaimed stay-at-home mom, Shirley found immense fulfillment in watching her children grow. Her heart swelled with pride and joy as she embraced her role in nurturing her children Ralph (Shirley) Pappenheimer, Sharon Butler, Lynn (Jon) Grooms, and Steve (Stacie) Pappenheimer. She was a devoted grandmother to Ian, Justin, Jason, and Jake Pappenheimer, as well as Kristina Johnson, Julie Goodman, and Jill Snapp. She was especially thrilled to welcome great-grandchildren Rachel, Claire, Anna, Leo, Alexis, Noah, Ava, Desiree, Charlie, Mila, and a great-great grandchild Mikaela into her life, each bringing her unparalleled joy, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sisters Roxie Bitzer and Faye Moss, as well as her brothers Allen and Jim Varner.
Shirley's joyful demeanor extended beyond her family. She loved to dance, travel, and create new experiences that enriched her life and the lives of others. She will be remembered for her warm smile, and unwavering love for those around her.
Funeral services for Shirley will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, with visitation taking place at the Evans Funeral Home in Milford at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. She will be laid to rest at Graceland Memorial Gardens, surrounded by family and friends who will gather to celebrate her remarkable life.
As we bid farewell to a truly extraordinary woman, we invite all who knew and loved Shirley to join us in honoring her memory and the indelible mark she left on all our hearts.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Laban & Mamie Varner, grandson Devin Butler, siblings Wesley, Earl, Joe, Warren, and Clifford Varner, Mary Pottinger, and Etta Shields.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are requested to the American Cancer Society.
