Shirley Ann Schoen

Shirley entered into eternal rest on December 14, 2023 at the age of 91, surrounded by family. She was born June 26, 1932 to Clinton Clyde and Minnie Florence Carswell.
Shirley graduated from Kansas State University with a teaching degree in Home Economics and worked in Minneapolis, KS her first year of teaching. On December 31, 1955, Shirley married James "Jim" Rinner Schoen in Downs, KS at her parent's home. After getting married, Shirley taught in Kensington, KS for a year before starting their family. She grew up Methodist and was then confirmed into the Lutheran Church after marrying Jim. She could often be found on the farm helping Jim take care of the pigs, hauling pipe, and all other farm related chores. Jim and Shirley enjoyed bird watching and traveling together, in their later years. She was a member of American Lutheran Church in Smith Center, KS.
In her personal life, Shirley was the cherished wife of the late James "Jim" Rinner Schoen, with whom she shared a beautiful and enduring love story. Together, they raised a family that was the center of her universe. She was a devoted mother to her children, Steve (Renee) Schoen, Marcia (Bryce) Scott, Denton (Stacy) Schoen, and Lyle (KyAnn) Schoen. Each of them carries forward her legacy of kindness and strength.
Shirley's joy multiplied with the arrival of each grandchild and great-grandchild. She took immense pride in her role as a grandmother to Steven Schoen, Kari (Mac McAllister) Kruzic, Jacob (Rebekah) Scott, Clinton Scott, Tasha (Mike) Markovich, Dairiane (Jacob) Cobb, and Morgan Schoen & Jordan Schoen. Her great-grandchildren, Brianna & Mia Kruzic, and Jameson & Maeve Cobb, brought her immeasurable happiness. When the grandkids were young, Shirley could often be found in the kitchen making snacks, such as ice cream with Nesquik on top, scrambled eggs and ham, ham and cheese sandwiches, and cinnamon raisin toast smothered with peanut butter. The grandkids knew right where to go at Shirleys to find the cookie drawer as well.
Shirley was preceded in death by her sister, Iris with whom she shared a special bond, filled with laughter and support. They navigated life's journey as confidantes and best friends.
Those who knew Shirley will remember her for her simplicity, kind heart, spirited wit, and generosity. She approached life with a gentle strength and an open heart, always ready to celebrate the successes of others and provide comfort during times of need. Her smile was a source of light, and her laughter a reminder of the joy she found in everyday moments.
