BESSEMER, Mich. – Shirley Ann Vomastek, age 98, a long-time resident of Bessemer, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025.

Shirley was born on April 20, 1927, in the township of Morse, county of Ashland, Wisconsin. She graduated from St. Sebastian School in 1940, A.D. Johnston High School in 1944 and St. Mary of Nazareth School of Nursing in Chicago in February 1948.

Shirley worked as a registered nurse at St. Mary's, Chicago, Newport Hospital in Ironwood and 31 years at Gogebic Medical Care Facility in Wakefield. She retired in 1987.

Shirley is survived by her sister-in-law, Joyce (Erickson) Vomastek; nephew, John Edward Vomastek (Cathy), and their children, Andrew, Anne, Nicholas, Mary, Emily and Rachel; nephew, James Vomastek (Lori), and their children, Daniel, Elizabeth, David and Kathryn; niece, Kathleen Anderson (Thomas), and their children, Anna, Grace and Peter; nephew, Joseph Vomastek (Kendel), and their son, Vincent; and nieces and nephews, (sister, Elaine Schwengber's children), Julie Ana Alvarenga (Sergio), Mary Lynn, Gloria Louise Kessler (Ingo), Dalton Roberto (Ceronir), Milton Neal, Lauro Daniel (Luty) and Susana Hayes (Patrick).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis Frank Vomastek and Mary Margaret (McMullin) Vomastek; niece, Anne Marie Vomastek; brother, John Louis Vomastek; and sister, Mary Elaine Schwengber (Lauro).

We would like to thank Fr. Dominic Agyapong for his kindness and loving friendship, which brought a lot of joy and comfort to Shirley. May he be blessed!

For our family and friends, one certainty remains: "recognize the special people you have been blessed to know." Aunt Shirley loved all of us and we loved her. She will always be in our hearts.

The family is honoring her life in private services.

Jerald Rocco, owner and manager of Lakeside Memorial Chapel Inc., in Wakefield, is assisting the family with arrangements.
