Shirley Ann Watkinson, 92, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 2:15 pm August 7, 2025 at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor. She was born December 12, 1932 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late Arthur and Dorothy Davis (Phillips) Warren. Shirley married Marion Watkinson on March 31, 1951. They were blessed with thirty-nine years of marriage before he preceded her in death on November 25, 1990.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved sons, Stephen Warren Watkinson and Michael Douglas Watkinson; half-brothers, Wheeler Warren and Howard Warren; half-sisters, Fredalee Williams and Margaret Clemens; and brother, William David Warren.

She is survived by: daughters-in-law, Patricia Ellen Watkinson of Phoenix, Arizona and Rita Watkinson of Mount Vernon, Illinois; grandchildren, Matthew Brady Watkinson of Phoenix, Arizona, Carson Watkinson of Phoenix, Arizona, Bethany Matthews and husband, Brandon of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Levi Watkinson and wife Katlyn of Dahlgren, Illinois, Caleb Watkinson of Mount Vernon, Illinois, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Born and raised in Mt. Vernon, Shirley lived a full life, including raising two sons and working in the Business Office at Good Samaritan Hospital. She was of the Protestant Faith. She generously volunteered throughout her life, including at the Bargain Box and with the Jefferson County Foster Grandparents at Bethel Grade School. She was a passionate gardener and animal lover, Shirley found peace and purpose in tending to her flowers and plants, and caring for her dogs and cats. When younger, she was an original Sub Deb at Mt. Vernon High School.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Memorials may be made in Shirley's honor to Jefferson County Animal Shelter.

A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, August 30, 2025 at 10:00 am at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
